Just Another Car on the Road: Here and Now

Most mornings, I hit the road before the sun does. Early starts give me freedom — the road is mine. I can cruise, make quick turns, take any on-ramp, off-ramp, or U-turn without checking my mirrors twice. My path is mine to redraw at will. No interruptions, no negotiations. Just motion.

But as the day grows, so does the traffic. Suddenly, the road gets crowded. My freedom becomes regulated by the cautious choreography of other drivers. The rules haven’t changed — but the space I have within them has.

And I’ll admit — it triggers something petty in me. I’ve been out here. I’ve earned this stretch of road. These latecomers? They’re crowding “my” lanes. I catch myself thinking: Where did they all come from? Don’t they have somewhere else to be?

But truth is, they’re licensed just like I am. They’ve got places to go, timetables to keep. Just like me. They’re not intruders — they’re participants. And right now, we’re all in the same flow, the same moment. Here and now.

Isn’t that just like life?

We carve out our spaces — our routines, our comforts — and call them our own. We guard them. We get territorial. And when new energy shows up — new people, new ideas, new rhythms — our first instinct is resistance. Who are you? Why now?

But pause. Zoom out. They’re here because they’ve met the same criteria to exist in this space as we have. They’re not taking your road. They’re sharing it. And the only way forward is together — here and now.

Okay, I’m here now — time to grab my client.
This is Ralph, and I’m just another car on the road.
